I think I have scurvy.

OMG, just finished watching Season 4 of Dexter and don’t have season 5 yet. How could they end like that?!

Let’s sit right now and I’ll tell you a tale of piss poor management.
Forward: Fuck you Eric, and your little dog too.

Timeline
Sept 26th: I was hired at Marble Slab Creamery. At that time, I was promised 20 hours a week and full time hours come summer.
Late October/Early November: Was told repeatedly by Emily that it would be slower and my shifts would need to be cut back. Was assured it will pick up in January and I’ll get more hours and to “hang in”.

During this time, I was present with one other co-worker for 3 closing shifts. All my other shifts ended prior to closing so I was not there for closing duties. During those 3 shifts, I mostly just cleaned up (wiped down, did dishes, swept, etc); Little to do with the closing duties around the food products itself.

Dec 8th: Eric called me, and advised me that the shift i had been working (Saturday nights) was going down to one person (instead of two) and I’d no longer have that shift. However, he felt confident that I could close myself and will discuss it with Emily on Monday (12th) and get back to me ‘early next week’.
Dec 16th, 22nd, 28th: Having not heard from either Emily or Eric, I e-mailed Emily asking her to contact me in regards to my next shift
Dec 17th & 23rd: Called and left voice mails on Emily’s cell asking her to contact me.
Dec 29th: Still not hearing from Emily, I found Eric’s email and asked him if he could contact me to let me know what was going on. I mentioned that I saw Emily’s Facebook saying she had phone issues, which may explain the lack of reply. A few hours later I received a reply from Eric advising me Emily still has e-mail access (eliminating the ‘benefit of the doubt’ aspect), and that nothing is decided yet and would “hopefully come up with something that is advantagous to all”.
Jan 2nd: Emily finally contacted me back, offering me a shift that upcoming Sunday and promising me hours going forward.

Taken from Jan 2nd Email:

[...]What’s going to happen is Eric and I are going to cover the weekday shifts, afternoon and night. And the weekends will be left open for you,Amy, Tanya and Cassie! The most I will be able to give you one shift every other week. But this is only for a couple months, if you bare with us through January and February business will go back up then I will be able to put you on a 25-35 hours a week schedule.[...]

The following weeks I needed to contact Emily to get the times for my shifts as they were not up on the schedule when last working.
January 17th: I went into the store when it opened to check my hours for the upcoming week and Eric talked at me for nearly 30 minutes about how there is simply no work. He repeated multiple times the ‘dirty closing’ on January 8th (failing to acknowledge me stating I spoke to Amy about her concerns) and the holes in the liter I scooped. At this time, he also denied me ever being promised hours every other week.

Complaints made against me
Of all the ‘complaints made’ against me that are being claimed, few were actually addressed to me.
1) November: Eric called me while working asking me if I charged a woman for a slab cake that was made. I said yes. He advised me that it was all ready paid for. I advised him it did not say on the paper. He stated the customer did not complain, he ‘just saw it’. The customer did not say anything to me in the store when paying about all ready paying for the product.
2) January 6th, Friday: I was advised by Eric on Sunday that my close on Friday was unacceptable and dirty. He said this was according to Amy (a coworker). He did not state what was dirty, just dirty. Speaking with Amy on Sunday, she said that all she noticed was the area around the mix-ins could have been cleaned up a bit better since there was some crumbs. However the rest of it was fine.
3) January 8th, Sunday: Eric called me during the shift to advise me that a customer from that evening complained that the liter of ice cream that I scooped had air holes in it. I don’t recall doing so, as it would not be intentional. At this time Eric advised me that a liter must contain at least 32oz of ice cream by the scale. Was was new to me, as I was previously told “just fill it to the top”.
4) January 24th: Speaking with Emily on the phone and being advised that I was terminated; she said it was due to my close on Sunday January 22nd being “atrocious” claiming that ice cream was left out, the cabinets were dirty, taps were running and the floors were a mess. This night I was also tasked with defrosting the dipping cabinets (which I had never been present for) and fail to see how ice cream would have been left out as the dipping cabinets were emptied and ice cream placed in back freezers.

Conclusion
Working for Eric Cook at Marble Slab Creamery in Kingston was a horrible experience. I received very, very little training; as such leaving large gaps of missing information needed to fully do my job; and was given next-to-no feedback. What little feedback I did receive was minor such as ‘ you’re doing good, just try to go a little faster ‘. In fact, I was told by Eric on Sunday Jan 8th after a large rush that I did a “great job handling the rush quickly and professionally”. Communication with the manager and owner was few and far between; leaving me to fend for myself in most cases. I was repeatedly lied to throughout my employment and false promises were made. Once would think if there was a specific issue, it should be addressed to be corrected. Throwing out such random terms as ‘was dirty’ is an unacceptable business practice.

I truly feel that my termination is not of my own doing, but the owner refusing to admit his mistake of hiring two additional people to serve ice cream during the winter. Add poor business sense, with pathetic management skills and lies and it’s a perfect combination of a poor work environment.

Hoping somebody gets run over by a bus feels even better when you know that they would leave a family behind to suffer.
